Africa-Press – Kenya. Thirdway Alliance Party leader Ekuru Aukot has opined that many Kenyans and the political class, do not understand what should happen in the political space.
He said there is a great need for political education in the country.
“We need to shift away from the talk of civic education to political education. We need to ask Kenyans what they understand about the politics of their country, especially on the choice of leaders and what to expect from an elected leader,” Aukot said.
In his opinion, even the discussion of creating an office for the Opposition leader is a sign that there is a lack of political education in the country.
He spoke on Wednesday during an interview with TV47.
Aukot said there is no need to speak about the office of the Opposition leader.
“If you look at the Parliament, the leadership already is created. The leader of the majority has been decided and he represents the people who form the government. The minority are actually in opposition,” Aukot said.
He said Kenyans ought to understand that the office of the Opposition leader cannot be created simply because one is very much revered among citizens.
Aukot said the talk of creating an office for the Opposition leader is misplaced as it is unconstitutional.
“We have not understood our constitution very well. If we understood our Constitution today, we should be expecting Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi to table an alternative policy document or motion to that of the government of the day,” Aukot said.
He said Wandayi’s position in Parliament is to counter with official documents and policy when it does not support an idea the government is planning to implement.
On Monday, Aukot had said he would move to court to stop any attempts at amending the Constitution to create the office of the Opposition leader.
According to Aukot, the Constitution, which is only 13 years old must be protected.
He went on to state that President William Ruto led the team that opposed the Constitution of Kenya, in 2010.
“I won’t be surprised. After all, President William Ruto opposed our CoK 2010 but continues to repeat its benefits. So, he will expediently violate to create such unnecessary offices. Tutakutane kotini. We must protect this,” Aukot said.
