Africa-Press – Kenya. St Mary’s School, Yala, and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, have booked their places in the rugby 15s semi-finals of the Nyanza Secondary Schools Sports Association Term One games at Maseno School.
Yala—popularly known as the Black Colts—and Cardinal Otunga advanced after registering back-to-back victories in the group stages, underlining their title credentials. Backed by Chief Principal V.O. Makanda, Yala produced a dominant display to shut out hosts Maseno School 19-0, sealing their place in the last four.
Cardinal Otunga also impressed, beating Friends School Anjego 11-0 to qualify, having earlier defeated Gendia High School 16-6. Otieno Oyoo High School also advanced to the semi-finals, edging Anjego 19-15 in their opener and then overcoming Gendia 21-10.
Their clash with Cardinal Otunga will determine the top team in Pool B. Defending champions Kisii School revived their semi-final hopes with a commanding 52-0 win over Nyambaria Senior School, bouncing back from their opening 11-3 loss to Yala. Kisii will now face hosts Maseno in a decisive match to determine who will join Yala in the semis.
“This game will be like a final. We must win and do it convincingly,” said Kisii coach Edwin Morara. In girls’ rugby 15s, Sigoti Complex will renew their rivalry with Nyagichenche Mixed in one semi-final, while Sidindi face Jans Group of Schools in the other.
In girls’ hockey, defending champions Ng’iya cruised into the semi-finals after thrashing former East Africa champions Sinyolo 4-0. Geke Mixed also advanced after beating Amaiko Girls School 2-0 to secure a second straight win.
In boys’ hockey, champions Ringa edged hosts Maseno School 1-0 to book a semi-final slot, while Ambira thrashed Nyambaria 6-0. The match between Kisumu Day and Oriwo was abandoned due to darkness, with Kisumu Day leading 2-0.
In boys’ basketball, favourites St Mary’s, Yala, and Agoro Sare advanced to the semi-finals after winning their opening two matches. Yala beat Kisumu Boys High School 55-28, while Agoro Sare thrashed Nyambaria Senior School 51-16.
