Young Wahome eager to become expert shooter after Africa bow

Africa-Press – Kenya. After competing at September’s IDPA Africa Shooting Championship, 17-year old Jonathan Wahome now wants to become an expert sharpshooter as he continues his ascendancy in the sport.

Wahome, who embraced shooting five years ago, has enjoyed a fruitful year during which he graduated from a marksman to a sharpshooter.

“My highlight of the year, obviously, is the African championships. I feel like I really trained for it and came away with very many lessons and a lot of experience. It was a wonderful opportunity to be competing at such an event even though I made a few mistakes,” Wahome said.

He added: “One of the things I have improved on over the years is how I approach situations. Shooting trains your mind and builds your mental strength. Going into next year, I pray that I continue to grow in the sport and graduate to an expert shooter.”

Apart from that continental competition, Wahome has also been a regular at various local shooting events that have been majorly held at the National Gun Owners Association’s shooting range in Kirigiti, Kiambu.

The film and TV production student at the Africa Digital Media Institute believes he will be a better player next season if only he diligently applies the lessons acquired in 2021.

“What I now know is the need to be energised always from start to finish. What happened at the Africa Championships was that I messed up in the second last course. That is what I have been working to correct ever since,” he said.

Wahome is the son of Anthony Wahome, NGAO’s former chair and one of the country’s shooters who has represented Kenya at the international level. He credited his father for his growth as a shooter.

“My dad is the main reason I came into this sport. He’s my mentor, the person I look up to and who I want to be. He encourages me when I am down and it’s a real privilege to train with him,” he said.

The youngster was among 117 competitors at the past weekend’s IDPA Chairman’s Cup at Kirigiti.
