AfricaPress-Kenya: The family of an assistant chief, killed in a tragic accident in Kinango on Sunday, is demanding justice for his sudden death as doubts grow whether his alleged killer will be arraignedLalo Lugho, who was Chengoni sub-location assistant chief, was riding his motorcycle when he was hit, run over and killed at Maji ya Chumvi area by a speeding police vehicle driven by a policewoman.
He was killed after leaving a road block he was manning to check illegal entry of motorists.Witnesses said the woman, who was accompanied by a male passenger, veered from her lane and hit the oncoming motorcycle.
Although police describe Sunday’s events as an accident, the deceased’s family through their spokesman Duncan Mbao, is demanding justice claiming the officer has neither approached them nor tendered any message of remorse. The family is demanding a thorough investigation.
Yesterday, Mariakani Sub-county police commander Ezekiel Chepkwony said the matter was still under investigation by the traffic department. He said the said officer, Nancy Odera, “was returning to her station at Taru police station where she heads the traffic department after attending a regional meeting in Mombasa”.
Chepkwony had earlier said the officer was in stable condition, but was still in shock.”The case is being handled at Mariakani. I will not comment, please liaise with them,” she said.
Chepkwony said the preliminary reports suggested the accident was caused by a mechanical failure. A decision to take the officer to court will be made after the ongoing probe is finalised.
