AfricaPress-Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga landed at Kisumu port last evening ahead of today’s planned launch of flagship projects funded by the national government.
Raila was the first to land at the port in a private chopper shortly after 5.30pm followed by the President aboard a Kenya Air Force jet. The two who were expected to tour the port drove straight to Kisumu state lodge.
They were welcomed by Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko who was seconded to oversee the port projects and Nyanza Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika.
Sources privy to the itinerary said the President will this morning commission the newly refurbished Marine Training School inside the port.
The World Bank and government funded construction of the institution at a cost of Sh80 million two years ago. The college has since opened doors to local and foreign students.
“Preparations have been concluded for the President’s visit, and more details will be given in due course,” said a source not authorised to speak to the Press.
The Head of State is also expected to launch the proposed Sh350 million Uhuru Business Park and the refurbished port.
Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko and city Manager Abala Wanga yesterday inspected works at the port.
The national government through the Kenya Railways has also started reconstruction of the old meter-gauge railway line from Nakuru to Kisumu.
The Government has approved Sh4.9 billion for construction of the 63km Kisumu-Mamboleo-Chemelil-Muhoroni road.
The Sh1.7 billion oil jetty, which was launched by the President two years ago is complete.
