AfricaPress-Kenya: Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli yesterday said that a visit by leaders from western Kenya to State House was fruitful as they secured goodies worth billions of shillings for the region.
Atwoli dismissed claims that the leaders led by him, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya had gone to see President Uhuru Kenyatta to ‘borrow a bus for Nzoia Sugar’.
Other leaders who attended the meeting were governors Wilbur Otichilo (Vihiga), Wycliffe Wangamati (Bungoma), Patrick Khaemba (Trans Nzoia) and Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia).Atwoli said they had secured Sh62 billion-waiver for debts the sugar firms in the region had accumulated for decades and paralysed the backbone of the region’s economy
“Those claiming that we had gone to borrow a bus are misleading people. Our farmers have been burdened by debts in the sugar sector for decades and we succeeded in having the president write off the loans.“There is no government that has done that and ours was a success,” Atwoli told the media from his Kajiado home yesterday.
Last week, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula, while accompanied by ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi, told residents in Trans Nzoia that the Wamalwa and Oparanya group had gone to request for a bus at State House.
