AfricaPress-Kenya: Kadu-Asili has written to the Registrar of Political Parties alleging a scheme by some Members of Parliament to hijack the party.
In a letter dated January 14, Coast based Kadu-Asili party leader Gerald Thoya asked the registrar to intervene to stop “illegal infringements” to his party.
Thoya told the registrar that the alleged attempted coup in the party had sparked mistrust and a leadership dispute.
Thoya claimed outsiders allied to Deputy President William Ruto had usurped Kadu-Asili leadership and amended its constitution to fit their interests without the knowledge of the party’s leadership.
“I wrote to the Registrar of Political Parties after I learnt that some people had invaded our party and amended the constitution, symbols, colours and slogan without our knowledge,” he said.
On Saturday, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa (pictured) launched a membership recruitment drive for Kadu-Asili at her home in Kakuyuni.
“Kadu-Asili is the house. The whistle has been blown and we are marching ahead with the coconut (the party’s symbol),” said Jumwa in her social media account.
The picture shared by Jumwa in her social media accounts, however, indicates that Kadu-Asili has changed its colours from green and black to green, white, red and black, like the Kenyan flag.
Yesterday, Jumwa’s phones went unanswered, but in one of her posts she claims the party would have new leaders to chart the political, economic and social direction for the Coast people.
Thoya now appears to pour cold water on Jumwa’s ambitions, accusing her of orchestrating a coup in the party.
“I had to move swiftly and rescue the party from these people masquerading as genuine politicians with the interests of the region at heart,” he said.
