Nakuru RFC seek revenge against Oilers in league tie

Felix Oloo’s charges eye bragging rights as they face cross-town neighbours. It will be a battle of cross-town neighbours when Menengai Oilers make the short trip to Nakuru Athletic Club to face Nakuru RFC in a Kenya Cup round 12 fixture today.

With both sides keen to preserve their playoffs positions (top six),there will be everything to play for in the 4pm match but top on Nakuru’s priority list will be avenging the 31-5 loss they suffered to Gibson Weru’s men in their first match of the season.

The teams head to the derby on the back of contrasting results last weekend. While Nakuru held their nerve to beat Mwamba at the Nairobi Railway Club, Oilers found themselves on the losing end as they went down 39-29 away at Impala Saracens.

Nakuru, who are under the tutelage of Kenya women’s head coach Felix Oloo, will be without Nelson Oyoo who is away on national team duty but they are expected to cope without the speedster who has made only one Kenya Cup appearance the entire season.

“For us it is about taking each game at a time. We won’t count the first leg result against Oilers as a loss because we had our own domestic issues which have been solved. I think we need to give our best in that game since we want a win,” Oloo said.

Nakuru occupy sixth position with 29 points, one adrift Oilers who are fifth and the Wanyore know that a win today will see them dislodge their neighbours.
The fixture will see Oilers’ duo Dalmus Chituyi and Geoffrey Ominde line up against their former employers.

At the same time, Mwamba will be out to bring their campaign back on track when they host Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.

The students are on a resurgence having thrashed fellow strugglers Western Bulls 44-0 in their last outing on match day 11 and another similar showing against the much fancied Mwamba will see them take a huge stride towards avoiding relegation.

“They are a side full of running  and that was the case in the opening half when we faced them in the first leg. I believe this time we shall be on top and give them the action rather than offer them a lot of space,” said Mwamba assistant coach Peterson Kefa.

League leaders Kabras Sugar are favourites to win at the Mamboleo Showground where they face lowly Kisumu RFC while Western Bulls welcome reigning champions KCB.

Today’s fixtures will mark the beginning of the second leg whereby teams which are in the same conference face off for the second time this season having played cross over matches with teams from the different conference.

KCB headline pool A that also has Homeboyz, Western Bulls, Kenya Harlequin, Nakuru RFC and Menengai Oilers.
