Africa-Press – Lesotho. The European Union (EU) has revealed that the war between Ukraine and Russia has negatively affected its projects. Notable is the current project which aims to address the green and resilient economy, good governance,
peaceful and just society and civil society and support measures, which is to consume a tune of M1.4 billion. This was said during the EU Day Commemoration in Maseru earlier this week.
The EU Lesotho Head of Delegation Paola Amadei has strained that the “unprovoked and unwarranted attack” by Russia on Ukraine is shaking the basis on which the European projects
were built. “Despite the extraordinary diplomatic efforts deployed in the last years by the EU and its Member States as well as other partners to seek a constructive dialogue with Moscow, also to avoid an escalation to war, Russia has chosen a different course and launched a full-scale military attack against Ukraine and is also threatening those countries that are providing support to the defense of Ukrainian sovereignty,” she said. According to Amadei, war in Ukraine is indeed affecting the EU directly but the “indiscriminate attack”
on Ukraine is a violation of the United Nations (UN) Charter and as such affects all UN members and makes all of them more vulnerable. She added that the EU Member States and Lesotho have been standing in solidarity with the UN to condemn the invasion and the violation of international humanitarian law and that this is a clear
sign of the strong values and principles that Lesotho and the EU share. Amadei mentioned that as the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President Josep Borrell stated thus; “No less than 141 states of the international community have explicitly rejected the Russian aggression against Ukraine at the UN
General Assembly. She said they are defending their own territorial integrity and sovereignty against future potential aggressions and saying ‘no’ to the
return of the law of the jungle in international relations. She noted that they are saying ‘no’ to the falsehoods from the Russian leadership and to the mantle of multilateral relativism under which they pretend to conceal their actions,” she said. Amedei further stated that EU bloc are also extremely concerned about the impact of the invasion on the global economy and global food security. “We have joined the calls notably from the UN and World Food Programme (WFP) to stop the blockade of Ukrainian ports to avoid the specter of famines across the globe.
The EU is already increasing its own food production and increasing resources for humanitarian assistance exponentially but it will not be sufficient if the war
does not stop. Farmers can’t go back to their fields and deliveries cannot take place without hindrances. Since the 24th of February we have witnessed
propaganda and fake news but also the extraordinary efforts of media workers to inform the public at very high cost as at least 10 have lost their lives and
many more have been affected directly or indirectly,”Amadei informed. Europe Day is a day to celebrate peace and unity throughout Europe. It is a collective duty to revitalize the European dream and re-invigorate European integration. Covid-19 has proven to the world however that to protect the lives and health of citizens and preserve the economy, the European Union must take robust actions proportionate to the dangers threatening.
