As Basotho across the country and abroad prepare to celebrate the Easter holiday, the Executive Director of the Migrant Workers Association of Lesotho, Mr. Lerato Nkhetsé, has extended heartfelt wishes to migrant workers while raising concern over the challenges they continue to face in foreign countries, particularly in neighbouring South Africa.
In an Easter message, Mr. Nkhetsé said the season should serve as a time of reflection, renewal and hope, but also an opportunity to remember Basotho living and working abroad, many of whom endure difficult conditions in pursuit of better livelihoods.
He noted with concern that some migrant workers experience mistreatment, discrimination and unsafe working environments, stressing the urgent need for government intervention to safeguard their rights and dignity.
Mr. Nkhetsé has called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prioritise the welfare of Basotho migrants by strengthening support through embassies and consulates. He said these offices must serve as reliable points of assistance, offering timely help to citizens facing injustice or abuse, while also ensuring that foreign authorities are held accountable where violations occur.
He further urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to accelerate the processing and issuance of passports, indicating that delays hinder citizens from accessing employment opportunities abroad. Mr. Nkhetsé emphasised that migrant workers play a crucial role in Lesotho’s economy through remittances, which support families, communities and national development.
Additionally, he appealed for clarity on the progress of the proposed migration model and the objectives of the Bi-National Commission, noting that improved systems for the movement of people and goods would enhance economic cooperation and the welfare of Basotho working outside the country.
Mr. Nkhetsé concluded by calling on the nation to remember and support Basotho migrants during the Easter period, acknowledging their sacrifices and reassuring them that they remain valued and not forgotten.
