Africa-Press – Lesotho. In an effort to strengthen the registration of sexual offence investigations in the country, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) handed over 10 000 forms to the Lesotho Mounted Police Services (LMPS) last Thursday.
In his welcome remarks, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Paseka Mokete disclosed that it was not the first time that UNFPA assist LMPS. He further stated that the handover marked the development of LMPS so that the Officers do not complain about lack of materials.
UNFPA Country Representative Dr. Marc Derveeuw applauded the efforts of LMPS in reducing and addressing Gender Based Violence (GBV). He also indicated that the hand over marked a step to strengthen registration of violence against women and girls in the country and towards a reliable data.
Dr. Marc also stated that UNFPA will continue to collaborate with LMPS. The Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Holomo Molibeli noted the compliment towards LMPS of working hard to reduce gender-based violence.
“It is not in many cases that LMPS is applauded for doing a good job, we are grateful to UNFPA,” he said. COMPOL also revealed that a report submitted to his desk indicates that sexual offences against women and girls is rampant.
He stressed that women and girls have to be and feel safe and that the community at large must care and protect these women and young girls. He further applauded the courts of law for frowning and giving harsh sentences towards sexual offenses.
COMPOL Molibeli further expressed gratitude to UNFPA for the assistance and said LMPS will distribute the sexual offence investigation materials to all districts. He concluded by stating that LMPS is aware of statistics, that it is mostly women who are abused and young girls between the ages of 9 to 10.
