Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) conference is rotationally held every year within member states and this year the conference will be held in Lesotho on May 14-18, 2019 under the theme “Teaching
and learning in Africa for global competitiveness,” AFTRA is an intergovernmental organization for the regulation of teaching in Africa. It draws its membership from the 54
African countries, their ministries of education, statutory national agencies regulating the teaching profession, universities and colleges of education,
national teachers union, and civil society organizations in education. It was inaugurated in Abuja, Nigeria in October 2010 by the then Nigeria’s Honorable
Minister of Education. The organization aims to ensure an African continent with a globally competitive teaching profession. It intends to raise teachers’ education, practice and status to the highest possible
standards in the African continent. According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, the conference is special as it will award AFTRA Medal of honor to deserving ministries and presidents who have made
meaningful contributions in the education of their countries. There will also be the convocation of special ministerial sessions to present to African Ministries of Education, the
10 year report of AFTRA and partners (AFRICAN Union Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) Teacher Development Cluster amongst others. The expectation is that the African
Union Honorable Commissioner of Human Resources, Science and Technology will be the rapporteur of the special Ministerial Session. The statement further showed that the best teachers who have made remarkable contributions to the development of the teaching profession in African member states will also be recognized.
