Africa-Press – Lesotho. BAM Group Foundation (BGF) together with Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services (LBTS) are working hand in hand in advocating for blood donation. The duo will facilitate a
blood donation camp on May 10th at BAM Promotions offices based at Metcash Complex. BGF, Acting Manager Reitumetse Phooko indicated that amidst the uproar of people on social media
asking for blood donation, it hit hard to the BGF team and they decided to organize a blood donation event in an effort to relief patients and help prevent
blood shortage in the Blood Bank. Reitumetse said donating blood is a humanitarian act done out of free will, saying blood donations are an important act and
people never realize it until it hits closer to home. In an interview with one of the beneficiaries of donated blood Yolisa Kosi, she told Informative
Newspaper that she was involved in a car accident and needed blood. She says it was a hassle to get blood so much that she ended up using WhatsApp and
Facebook statuses to get people to help her as there was no blood in reserve bank and her blood group also posed another problem. It took less than a week
to get a donor due to the campaign her family and friends ran over the social media. Kosi encouraged people to become regular blood donors as this will help
one day when they need blood donations. Meanwhile, LBTS Blood Donor Recruiter Khatala Liphoto said blood is needed by women with complications of child birth during emergency surgical operations, anaemic
patients and at life threatening road traffic accidents. Liphoto also specified that people who are eligible to donate blood are those who are between 16-60
years, healthy, weigh 50kg or more, not on any medication for a serious illness, have not been in a country with malaria in the past 4 weeks or been infected with malaria in the past 12 months.
Liphoto further signposted that it takes 10-15 minutes to donate blood and another 10-15 minutes for donor education and rest after blood donation. The whole process takes 30 minutes at
most. BAM Group Foundation is the philanthropic arm of BAM Group of Companies with a mission to empower women and youth, entrepreneurs’ development and community building.
BGF places high premium on equipping its beneficiaries with world class growth and skills and general support to enable them eradicate exclusion and poverty in their lives
and contribute significantly to reducing unemployment or non-productivity and the inequality divide. The Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services is an entity that coordinates and monitors recruitment and collection
of blood from suitable blood donors in the country. It is an integral part of the Central Laboratory Services by the Ministry of Health and its goal is to provide safe and adequate blood and blood products to all the hospitals in the country.
