Africa-Press – Lesotho. Plastic Free Wednesday initiative was launched early this month to reduce single use of plastics to curb plastic pollution, and to promote use of reusable bags. Woolworths Lesotho today officially declared plastic free shopping.
Speaking at the event held at their Pioneer Mall shop, Stanley Damane on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture said this initiative is important in ensuring management of plastic and influencing Basotho to explore sustainable means of recycling plastic.
“It is an honour to witness Woolworth’s declaration to stop offering plastic bags and turn to reusable bags. We are grateful for this gesture. Now, to the rest of the public, let us welcome this initiative and contribute towards plastic waste management,” he said.
Store manager Teboho Motosola expressed appreciation to other stakeholders of this initiative which include UNDP, Maseru City Council and the tourism ministry. He added that Woolworths continues to be intentional in ending plastic use in their store and adapting to ways of using reusable material.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday last week shoppers at Shoprite LNDC were surprised when till operators told them there would be no plastic bags for their shopping as part of the same initiative to reduce plastic waste.
