Maseru, Feb.02 — Bureau of Statistics (BoS) is gearing up well for 2026 Lesotho Housing and Population Census to be in April, says Director Mrs. ‘Malehloa Molato.

Population censuses in Lesotho are conducted every 10 years, with the last one carried back in 2016.

Mrs. Molato said they have completed the Cartography Mapping of Enumeration Areas in December 2025 as one of the guiding tools of census which helps in establishing a sample frame as well as determining human resource needed for the entire population count.

She said materials needed for the census are already available except for the gadgets and recruitment of enumerators which she said for the latter, posts advertisement will be soon while for gadgets, the procurement is in the pipeline.

She explained that for the past census and the upcoming one they have opted to digitize the system, saying this provides more accurate population data benchmarks, as well as geographic frame for household-based surveys and related statistical sample enquiries.

“The tablets are used for data collection which results in quick release of the census findings because four census processes are done simultaneously to cut down the data processing time and these processes include data collection, primary editing, verification and capturing,” she said.

Moreover, she said population counts are important as they provide up-to-date information for policy makers, planners, researchers and programme managers that would provide guidance in the development, monitoring and evaluation of national programs and projects.

She added that enumerators will collect information on age, sex, education, employment, household composition, access to electricity and sanitation as well as sources of drinking water and housing materials. . . .
