Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Government of Lesotho, through the Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Minister Nthati Moorosi, presented the June 2025 Cabinet decisions.
These decisions highlight the government’s ongoing focus on inclusive governance, sustainable growth, national development, and international cooperation.
To address the challenges of climate change, Moorosi said that the Cabinet endorsed a partnership with African Risk Capacity (ARC) Ltd. to improve the country’s drought response mechanisms. This move aims to safeguard food security and reduce the impact of climate crises on vulnerable communities, noting that the insurance will be overseen by the Disaster Management Authority (DMA).
Moorosi also highlighted that Lesotho is taking steps to strengthen its digital future by joining the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), an organisation that provides email addresses. “We hope to promote safe and inclusive internet access for economic development, and also be able to get our addresses straight from them,” she said.
Another significant development was the approval of the Lesotho Bulk Water Authority Bill 2025, which seeks to create a national body that will regulate water supply and ensure efficient distribution across the country, noting that Cabinet has passed the bill to Parliament.
In a gesture of honour and unity, the nation is preparing to celebrate the 62nd birthday of His Majesty King Letsie III on July 17, 2025, in Berea. A total of 1,146 medals will be presented to deserving members of the security sector, including the army, police, and correctional services.
The Cabinet also endorsed a new national policy to strengthen dialogue between government employees and management, a vital step toward improving labour relations in the public sector.
Moorosi further noted that Cabinet announced the release of 240 inmates in celebration of Lesotho’s 200-year milestone, an act of compassion and rehabilitation.
Lesotho’s presence on the global stage continues to expand. Cabinet received briefings on several key international forums including the UPR session in Geneva, the US-Africa Business Summit in Angola, and finance-related engagements in Spain and the US. These platforms aim to deepen Lesotho’s integration into the global economy and attract investment and development assistance.
Finally, Lesotho reaffirmed its commitment to continental cooperation by participating in major African Union and SADC meetings, which focused on migration, energy, and water.
The decisions taken this June underscore the government’s broader ambition to uplift Basotho through inclusive, transparent, and responsive leadership.
To touch a little on the declaration of youth unemployment as a national disaster by The Right Honourable Prime Minister, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, Moorosi said that almost each and every ministry is working on creating jobs for the youth.
“There is so much being done on ensuring that the youth of Lesotho are employed, and as the speaker of the Government of Lesotho, I have advised myself to report results when it comes to saying we will implement this and that, because it has been said a couple of times.”
She said that in the next Cabinet briefing, there will be results showing how much has been done to address the issue of unemployment.
