Africa-Press – Lesotho. Ahead of this year’s WAFCON competition, which will take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26, the Confederation of African Football is scheduled to unveil a new trophy on Wednesday.

Three days prior to the reveal, CAF made the news. In a statement, CAF announced that Morocco, the host country for this year’s competition, will host the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s goal to advance women’s football in Africa includes the new trophy.

On the same day, CAF will have an activation event with its sponsors, TotalEnergies, in the evening after launching the trophy on its digital platforms in the afternoon.

The prize money for the 12-team competition has also increased ahead of this year’s event, going from $975,000 to $2,400,000 in the previous edition.

Nigeria, the 11-time champion, has been drawn against Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria, while hosts Morocco is in Group A with Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In Group C, South Africa starts defending their championship against Tanzania, Ghana, and Mali. Morocco, the tournament’s hosts, will meet Zambia in the opening match at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium.

Since 1998, CAF has been hosting the WAFCON, a biannual international women’s football competition, as a means of qualifying African countries for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

It was renamed as a biennial event in 1998 after beginning as a home-and-away qualifying competition.

As of the 2016 edition, it is known by its present name. Nigeria has advanced to the semi-finals of every tournament they have participated in and won nine of the 12 since the competition’s inception in 1998, making them the most successful country in its history.

South Africa is the current champions after winning the most recent 2022 edition, making them the third African country to win the tournament. Equatorial Guinea won as hosts of the 2008 and 2012 editions.

The only countries that have advanced to the competition final besides the previous winners are Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon.
