Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) together with the Ministry of Health (MoH) invite the general public to join in the celebration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14.
Eligible citizens are invited to donate blood and part take in spreading the word about blood donation. World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated under the theme “Donating
blood is an act of solidarity, join the effort and save lives”. Police Senior Inspector Phethisang Luka said they have joined forces with the Blood Transfusion Services (LBTS)
to help create awareness across the world about the need for safe blood transfusion and to express gratitude to voluntary blood donors. Blood donation in the country is still a major problem as people lack
knowledge on the importance of donating blood hence the scarcity of blood donors which are noted to result in a shortage of blood in hospitals. Luka said there
will be a fun walk on the 14th from LMPS headquarters to Maseru West where everyone can also donate blood. LBTS Manager, ‘Maleqhoa Nyopa commended the LMPS for making
it a priority to donate blood and also help in the initiative to help educate everyone about blood donation. She, however notified that not everyone is allowed to donate blood, saying people with chronic health
issues like HIV& AIDS cannot donate blood but those with sugar diabetes can donate blood only if their conditions are regulated, Nyopa added that blood
donations helps people know other curable diseases that they might have because they undergo blood screening. Meanwhile, Police Assistant Commissioner Dr ‘Mopa Tsiu said we should popularize blood donations and be our
brother’s keepers, he said they are committed to help the LBTS because it is their responsibility to protect the people. He said everyone should know their blood group, adding that blood donation should be the new norm.
