Africa-Press – Lesotho. Minister of Water Samonyane Ntsekele on Friday gave clean water supply to China-Lesotho Friendship School at Sehlabeng to ensure good health for learners at the school.
Ntsekele said this comes after his ministry bought two sets of drilling rigs to install boreholes at the school. In addition, he said, the nearby schools will also benefit and get free access to clean water.
He said he first came to this school after the Minister of Education and Training Mokhele Moletsane and Berea Member of Parliament Motlatsi Maqelepo approached him to deliver water to the school.
He however pointed that they also met with a challenge of the shortage of underground water in the campus, but pointed that they would ensure that the students get access to clean water.
He also thanked Peoples Republic of China Ambassador to Lesotho Dr Sun Xianghua for the building of school, and that after receiving the gift, it was now their responsibility to come with other developments to make the project work.
Minister of Education and Training Mokhele Moletsane expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Water for the donation and said access to water was very important for students’ health and ability to learn.
He added that as a ministry, they had the mandate and responsibility of ensuring relevant, quality and equitable education for all, and with access to clean water the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), goal number four, of ensuring quality education for all, will be met.
He said even though MPs approach the Water Ministry to provide them with water in their various constituencies, the ministry has to start in schools because when giving water to such schools, the whole constituency would benefit.
He added that in some schools where there is no water, the feeding schemes are not even working because there is no water to cook, and that students go with empty stomachs, which is another problem hindering quality education for all.
Delivering his remarks Ambassador Xianghua said they know that water is very important in school to ensure excellent education and said it was his hope that the school would benefit Basotho youth as they are the future of this country and therefore help to change it for the better.
