CONFUSION, CRITICISM FOLLOW DISMISSAL OF QACHA’SNEK TOWN

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The recent dismissal of Qacha’s Nek town chief, Nkuebe Makhaola, by Principal Chief Mojela Makotoko Theko Makhaola has sparked widespread confusion and criticism among local leaders and residents.

The decision to replace him with Lerotholi Makhaola, officially effective June 01, has been met with questions about the reasons behind the move and concerns over transparency and service disruption.

In a letter dated April 02, 2025, but only submitted to the District Administrator’s office on April 08, the Principal Chief stated that Lerotholi would assume office effective June 01, citing Nkuebe’s alleged failure to cooperate with the Principal Chief’s office based in Ha Rats’oleli.

“As the Principal Chief, I cannot serve as town chief. Lerotholi will take over, effective June 01,” reads the letter.

It further states that Lerotholi, described as the son of the Principal Chief’s paternal uncle, should begin receiving payment stopping that of Nkuebe.

However, the Agency has learnt that the Public Service system rejected Lerotholi’s appointment, reportedly due to employment classification as a civil servant, which left the position temporarily vacant.

As a result, Chieftainess ’Mamothalali Sehahle of Letlapeng was appointed to serve in an interim capacity for this month.
