Covid-19 hits Likuena squad

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) announced this week that three players from the Senior National team Likuena squad and two officials have tested

positive for Covid-19. “These members therefore failed to travel with the club for the first leg match in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cotonou, Benin scheduled to be on the 14th

November 2020,” LeFA noted in a statement. The double header was initially scheduled for March earlier this year but had to be postponed after football activities were suspended due to Covid-19 outbreak.

The statement further noted that due to patient and doctor confidentiality, LeFA will not disclose the names of those players but revealed that all the players and officials are already in

isolation and in a stable condition. The association said it will continue to give them all the support they need during their recovery and appealed to the

members of the public to respect privacy of the players and their families. LeFA Secretary General Mokhosi Mohapi in an interview with Informative Sport revealed

that the players conducted Covid-19 tests twice before they departed to Benin. “During their first tests, two players’ results turned out to be positive while the

results of the third player was negative and on their second tests, he was among the positive,” he informed. Asked about the impact this will pose in the

upcoming AFCON games in Cotonou, Benin and Maseru, Lesotho respectively, Mohapi said since they have been called in the senior national squad, their absence

will cost a lot to the team. LeFA President Advocate Salemane Phafane Kings Council (KC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) showed an appreciation to Likuena FC Head Coach Thabo

Senong, all members of the technical team and the players for the commitment they have shown since the team started with its preparations regardless of the

challenges brought by the outbreak and wished the team well in their double header against Benin, scheduled for 14th and 17th November respectively. Meanwhile, LeFA also reported yesterday that all Likuena players have tested negative as the tests were conducted upon their arrival in Cotonou.
