Debswana donates P1m ICT equipment to Boteti schools

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Debswana has donated more than P1m worth of ICT equipment, inclusive of educational software, to enhance learning in some Boteti schools. The company also provided capacity building for teachers. The equipment was acquired at a value of P850 000 out of the P1 580 000 spent which covered educational software and capacity building for teachers.

Speaking during the donation on Wednesday General Manager of Orapa Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines, Mr Mogakolodi Maoketsa, said apart from enhancing learning, Debswana was committed to supporting and complementing the government’s efforts to facilitate educational enrichment through digital technology and bridge the digital divide.

He said it was part of their partnership with Boteti District Council, the partnership that underpinned their commitment to the promotion of academic excellence in schools as espoused not only in Debswana Building Forever Strategy but also in Botswana Vision 2036.

Mr Maoketsa said the aim was to improve connectivity and digitization of schools in the OLDM area of influence through the project. The objective, he said, was to improve delivery of quality teaching and learning as well as to create enabling teaching and learning environment for students in the zone of influence.

“It goes without saying that for our children to achieve academic excellence, we must continuously review teaching strategies and methods to support students in their learning in an effort to realise effective instruction in the classroom,” he said.

As a key player and major contributor in the education sector, “it was precisely in this context that Debswana saw it fit to procure and donate ICT equipment that comprised 30 laptops installed with smart suites learning software including laptop bags, 30 projectors including projector screens, and 15 routers for internet connectivity,” he said.

The smart suites learning software, he said, was a powerfully easy to use tool for teachers for quick and easy creation of interactive lessons, use compelling graphics, animations and sounds to keep students engaged throughout the lesson.

Mr Maoketsa stated that engagement with schools to analyse the gaps and needs on the ground had been done in partnership with Boteti District and the devices would be given to the neediest schools in the district.

He said he believed that the donation would go a long way in assisting learners in their studies and enrich their educational experience through the opportunity presented by digital technology and ultimately afford learners a competitive edge in the increasing globalised job market.
