Africa-Press – Lesotho. THE Roads Directorate is embarking on a M16 million project to revamp the country’s road network. The project will create 850 new jobs for Basotho. The Acting Director General of the Roads Directorate, Teboho Mokhoane, said the funds will be distributed to pay workers, buy work tools, materials and finance other occupational costs.
Mokhoane said the project is expected to maintain current potholes and maintain the farrows. He said all the rocks on the roads and besides the roads will be removed too.
He said the funds will be used to maintain and build new road signs which no longer function. He said there will also build culverts and guardrails. Mokhoane said the water drainage system will also be fixed to allow smooth flowing of water.
“According to the studies, the major enemy of our roads is water,” he said. He said the construction and maintenance work will help sustain our roads’ life.
Mokhoane said after the completion of the project, the roads will have to be revisited each and every time. He explained that after heavy rain seasons, the roads will have to be maintained.
However, he said in the past years the roads have not been maintained due to lack of funds. He said their expectation was to hire workers for road construction and maintenance, however, due to lack of funds, they opted for labourers.
The Director Roads Maintenance officer, Lebohang Mohau, said the project will cover the primary road network from Mokhotlong, Butha-Buthe, Hlotse, Maseru, Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek, Quthing to Qacha’s Nek.
He further said the other road network will include the road from Masiakoneng, St Michael’s to Thaba-Tseka including Roma. “However, the road network from Roma to Qacha’s Nek will be included in the coming projects,” he said.
Mohau said the construction will also include the road network from the Cathedral Area in Maseru to the Maseru Bridge. He further said from the main circle they will maintain the roads to the south of the capital Maseru.
