Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has today reported back to the public progress on its initiative to purchase maize and beans from local farmers to stockpile for future relief operations.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer, ‘Makhotso Mahosi, revealed during a press briefing today that the Authority embarked upon the sale of the produce informed by a recommendation the Lesotho Vulnerability Assessment Committee (LVAC) which researches and advises on human livelihoods and assesses measures to be employed during disasters such as Covid-19, heavy rains and floods.
Mahosi said that these recommendations came into effect from 2020 after the LVAC researches showed that more people were at risk of shortage of food due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim of this initiative is to increase the productivity of farmers through market production and meet the needs of vulnerable families.
“We have also received a number of damage reports caused by heavy rains beginning November of the past year; such damage has been recorded on businesses, roads, bridges and most importantly loss of lives from flooded rivers,” said Mahosi.
Mahosi further indicated that steps are afoot to establish the extent of the actual damage caused by the heavy downpours to enable development of an action-plan to respond to the aftermath of the heavy rains.
