Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Development for Peace Education (DPE) has provided training for kings and local government officials on training in the fight against the Corona virus. The training started on November 19, 2020, and is scheduled to close on April 26.

According to DPE Peace Research Researcher Ms ‘Mabataung Secker, the training was held for the kings and local government candidates of‘ Mamaebana Lehlakaneng, Lebakeng Ntšupe, Seforong Mphaki and Polihali Seate.

Continuing, Secker pointed out that the DPE was providing tips, with the main objective of empowering them and informing them about Covid-19 issues as it had come to their notice as DPE that the Covid-19 is widely used in Maseru district.

He explained the establishment of the Covid-19 regulatory body which is the National Emergency Command Center (NECC) now known as the National COVID-19 Secretariat (NACOSEC).

He said it was appropriate to fight the disease within local government councils, chiefs and communities as they were the ones who were most likely to see people entering villages from South Africa.

He pointed out that each city is advised to form a committee that will lead the community to provide education and guide them to formulate policies to combat the Corona epidemic in the villages where the King and local government candidates should provide guidance.

He said the move would be supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the British High Commission, DLN and OSISA. Secker pointed out that in the course of the course, the issues of Covid-19 exposure were discussed, and how to combat the disease in communities to prevent the spread of new infections.

He also explained that it is during this Christmas holiday season that the Basotho people are flocking to the country, so it must be determined how it is managed so that they can be accepted and care where they are kept.

He said the DPE plans to produce vegetables such as vegetables in the villages as it has come to their notice that the community is starving, and ‘tippy taps’ will be made to bring water closer to the people to comply with Covid-19 anti-corruption laws.

Concluding his remarks, Secker appealed to the Basotho community to support each other and to reduce stigma and discrimination in the fight against the disease.

In an interview with King of the Qacha’s Nek, King Malefane Ralikhatala Lerotholi explained that the DPE’s visit to his district was very important as it was the first organization to visit them since Covid-19.

He pointed out that they were proud to be the first to be visited, to bring face to face with the DPE. Lerotholi also said that the training was very useful as it was not only about Covid-19 but the DPE gave them tips on how to resolve conflicts between them without bloodshed.
