Africa-Press – Lesotho. Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL), the country’s leading telecommunications provider, has officially launched a major upgrade to its Maseru Radio Access Network (RAN) and Transport Network.
This major project is aimed at improving the digital experience for all its customers.
The first phase of the project started in February 2025 and has now been successfully completed. Econet is currently entering the next critical stage, with major milestones planned between 20 May and 30 July, 2025.
During this period, customers might notice small service interruptions but these are temporary and part of a phased roll-out that will ultimately enhance both mobile and internet services nationwide.
“This network transformation shows our strong commitment to building a smarter, faster, and more resilient digital future for Lesotho,” said Dennis Plaatjies, Chief Executive Officer of Econet Telecom Lesotho.
“We are not just upgrading equipment, we are driving progress and strengthening the backbone of digital connectivity in our country.”
As part of the upgrade, Econet is replacing old radio systems with new, high-performance units at key locations. The company is also strengthening its transport network, the system that supports data traffic to meet the rising demand for fast and reliable services.
“We are taking every precaution to avoid service disruptions and make sure businesses and users continue operating smoothly during this process,” said Plaatjies.
Key Benefits of the Upgrade, include:
Enhanced Transport Infrastructure: The expansion of Econet’s core network will lead to faster data flow, improved data routing, and support for more advanced digital services throughout Lesotho; and,
Improved 4G and 5G Services: By upgrading its mobile network, Econet will reduce congestion, increase coverage, and improve the quality of both voice and data services for customers using 4G and 5G.
The roll-out will be done one site at a time in Maseru. This phased method allows for careful work at each location to ensure the highest quality and minimal impact on users.
“As we continue this journey, every customer, partner, and team member play a vital role. Together, we are building a more connected Lesotho, one that is ready for the digital future,” Plaatjies concluded.
