Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Minister of Education and Training, Prof. Ntoi Rapapa awarded three winners of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) English essay competition at the event held at the ministry’s premises in Maseru.

The 2022 SADC Essay Competition topic was ‘How can SADC boost production capacity in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic’. The three winners are; Thato Molongoana from Sefate Sa Bophelo English Medium who won the 1st prize, Kefuoe Mahloko with the 2nd prize and Bongiwe Mekoane who won the 3rd prize.

The last two come from St. Stephens High school. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Rapapa congratulated the SADC 2022 essay competition winners who are girls, saying their achievement made the whole nation proud.

He, therefore, urged students to always use opportunities presented to them as they will pave a way for a better future. He further said that this has shown them that education is indeed a key to success and they should feel proud of their achievement hence wishing them luck in their future endeavours.

He said the ministry will keep track of them to see where they are regarding education and will always consider them when such opportunities as presented to the ministry.

On behalf of the students, Thato Molongoana said although the topic of the competition was challenging it has equipped them with the skills such as conducting research.

Thato said they appreciate the support they got from their parents and teachers, also thanking SADC for this opportunity. On behalf of the represented schools, Mr.

Tšitso Letsie commended the good work, dedication and braveness shown by the students. He also applauded the Ministry for presenting opportunities of this nature to Basotho students.

He said this has shown that their students fully understand what they are taught in their classrooms. The awards included 500 USD, 300 USD and 200 USD.

Meanwhile, topic for the 2023 SADC essay competition is; ‘How can SADC promote industrialisation for inclusive, resilient and sustainable economic growth?
