ETL introduces a nationwide WiFi Plus to boost connectivity

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has officially launched its new and improved internet service, ECONET WiFi Plus, a Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC), marking a major step forward in strengthening digital connectivity across all 10 districts of Lesotho.

The service will provide access to opportunity, education, and economic growth through high-speed and reliable internet.

WiFi Plus is designed to offer faster, stronger, and more stable internet connections whether for home use, schools, clinics, or business spaces. The goal is to help Basotho stay connected, whether for work, school, entertainment, or entrepreneurship, no matter where they are in the country.

With this new launch, ETL is promising enhanced network coverage, improved internet speed, and tailored packages that suit the variable needs of its customers across Lesotho.

Speaking during the launch event at Thabeng Hotel, ETL CEO Dennis Plaatjies emphasised that the introduction of WiFi Plus is part of the company’s continued efforts to digitally empower the country and keep it in step with technological advancements.

“Econet has been part of Lesotho’s digital transformation story for close to two decades. From the days when mobile phones were a luxury, to now where having a connected mobile phone is a basic need,” said Plaatjies.

He further stated that ETL has already installed WiFi Fiber across nine of the ten districts in Lesotho and that efforts are underway to complete coverage in the final district, Thaba-Tseka.

Additionally, he introduced Eco-touch, a virtual AI-powered solution designed to empower the youth with online learning and help entrepreneurs manage their businesses more efficiently.

According to Plaatjies, the launch of WiFi Plus comes with an expansion of the Econet Fiber transmission network capacity, aiming to support faster network speeds, low latency, and enhanced cybersecurity across the country.

“We want to ensure that schools and clinics in the rural areas also have access to high-speed connectivity,” said Plaatjies, adding that the launch of ECONET WiFi Plus (FMC) brings simpler and more user-friendly connectivity to all.

He emphasised that this upgrade is more than just an improvement in internet speed, it is about equipping Basotho with the tools they need to thrive in a modern digital world.

In a panel discussion at the event, ETL’s Product Manager Data Ntina Sehloho explained that ECONET WiFi Plus is more than just a smart product, it is an all-in-one solution created with the needs of ETL customers in mind.

Sehloho outlined several benefits that come with the new product, including sharable mobile data, sharable mobile voice bundles, and Omnivoice services, all accessible from as little as M50.00 top-up, plus three additional SIM cards.

“For MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), the new product also comes with specific packages designed just for them. They get the opportunity to add their own exclusive add-ons—54G mobile data, 120 mobile voice bundles, and up to three extensions with Mobile data, Mobile voice, and Omnivoice from as little as M99.00 top up,” said Sehloho.

She further explained that customers on unlimited data contracts can also enjoy the benefit of extra prepaid SIM cards to share with their family members. These SIM cards will be automatically credited with data and voice minutes when the primary user tops up their contract.

“You get to have additional prepaid SIM cards to share with your family members while on your unlimited data contract. The SIM cards will be credited with data and minutes when you top-up on your contract,” said Sehloho.

With this latest innovation, ETL aims to bridge the digital divide in Lesotho and give every Mosotho a chance to participate in today’s fast-growing digital economy.
