Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho National Farmers Union (LENAFU) and the Peace and Development Education (DPE) have met with political parties and councils to immediately consider the needs of farmers in these upcoming elections.

As part of the Basotho community, farmers are preparing for these elections with great enthusiasm and recognizing the importance of elections in the development of the country, and in the field of agriculture itself, farmers are commenting on how they have seen agriculture improve.

in it. LENAFU Representative Mr Khotso Lepheane said LENAFU is a ‘farmers’ association within Lesotho’ and currently has organizations in ten districts.

Lepheane went on to say that to give politicians numbers when they go to the national elections, all they need from them is services. He said the services would be heard on the lips during the election process and would be held in person after the election.

“As an organization, we need to be seen as moving closer to the future rulers, closer to the future leadership of the country where we say we present what we call our needs to them in order to ensure that all their policies , ”He said.

He went on to say that as LENAFU in collaboration with the DPE, they have tried to bring farmers together to gather ideas, interests and challenges that target Lesotho agriculture as a whole and through their ideas they create what they say. is a vision for agriculture for the growth of agriculture in Lesotho.

Lepheane said through the cries of various political parties and councils, what they are asking for is for parties and councils to have discussions with farmers where they will present their needs in order to move the country forward without getting support.

He added that in their calls, they expect to see a proposal on how they will work on refereeing issues to see their agriculture supported. He says they should also explain how they will raise the issue to the depths they are in and they also need veterinarians.

“We also need to talk about agriculture and understand the existing policies and the challenges posed by the policies I have implemented,” he said.

DPE Representative Mr Sophonea Shale said among the needs of farmers was the establishment of an agricultural development bank that would help Basotho farmers in their situation to grow in agriculture.

Farmers need to improve the production of vegetables, meat and eggs and even their ‘market’ will be produced through a single channel of control and guidance centers.

“Farmers also say that it should be a government policy to buy their produce and not just a school nutrition option.

This means that all food processing centers like Basotho, such as mills, shops, government agencies, restaurants and guest houses, buy food produced by Basotho, ”he appealed.

Farmers also say that agricultural imports such as imported machinery should not be taxed as this would prevent smallholder farmers from importing the goods from South Africa.

Farmers’ access and supply chain should be managed independently by the government, farmers and traders so that the sector is more timely to farmers and more efficient and free from corruption.
