Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Minister of Health Hon. Motlatsi Maqelepo received 4 ambulances on behalf of the government of Lesotho from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Lesotho
and Health Riders Lesotho. Communicating the allocation of the ambulances yesterday at the handover ceremony, the Ministry of Health (MoH) Deputy Principal Secretary (DPS) Advocate Lesimole Moletsane
indicated that the two ambulances from Health Riders Lesotho will be placed in the health centers while the other two from UNDP will be positioned at the hospitals.
UN Representative Lesotho Betty Wabunoha said UNDP has been extending a helping hand globally, to reach out to the countries and support in the national
responses. She said the headquarters offered financial support to quickly join up with the government partners to respond in the areas where the MoH indicated
as the priority, where among the needs, ambulances were core to support the out stations to be able to reach the patients on time and to save lives. “It
is our pleasure that we have been able to support in this endeavor as two of our ambulances will be send to Mokhotlong district and another to Leribe.
We believe the community in these locations will greatly benefit from having these ambulances. The two ambulances cost about US$90 000 and we ensured that they
cover the maintenance costs that runs for 5 years,” Wabunoha enlightened. The British High Commissioner to Lesotho Anne Macro showed that Health Riders
Lesotho’s contribution of two ambulances was donated by British couple Charles and Suzie Macro. “Among the places that this couple visited in Lesotho in 2018,
are Semonkong where they saw the work of the riders and also the ambulance that was donated by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) through Riders for Health in
2012. They were touched by how that ambulance has helped to reduce maternal and
infant mortality,” she stated. Macro also indicated that the couple also recognized that despite the services provided by Riders in Health mechanics to
all their vehicles, the ambulance could not last forever so they decided to raise money for its replacement with two ambulances that will go to the remote areas in Semonkong and Linakeng Health centers. Filled with excitement, the Minister of Health Hon.
Maqelepo said, “this equipment comes at the right time when the ministry is working so hard to fight Covid-19 and I can assure you that this equipment will go a long way in helping Basotho to combat the pandemic.
Our responsibility as the ministry is to make sure that Basotho are provided with health services,” he stated. If you would like to subscribe for informative newspaper FREE WhatsApp Edition, please follow this link to join.
