Africa-Press – Lesotho. Minister of Police and Public Safety Hon. ‘Mamoipone Senauoane announced the death of four police recruits on Saturday. According to Senauoane, from the 300 Basotho who commenced their training at Police Training
College (PTC) on February 15th, 4 trainees comprising of three girls and one boy lost their lives. She said proper investigations are underway to determine the cause of their deaths.
“We have also taken proper procedures to ensure that the other trainees are safe,” she said. Senauoane passed her condolences to His Majesty King Letsie
III and his government, families of the deceased and the nation in general on behalf of the ministry. She said earlier this month on February 9th 2021, many families were
excited when their members were announced to commence Police trainings. She said this brought hope to those trainees, who were expected to fill the empty
spaces within the Police department and to continue with the task of protection and public safety. Senauoane further said on February 15th, the trainees showed up at PTC as expected and they went through health inspections
whereby they were tested for Covid-19 and other diseases. “They also went through other tests to examine if they are in good health to commence the training and they all qualified except for one lady who was found to be pregnant,”
she said. Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli said this is a very sad moment and a great loss to the police department. He added that even though the country
is still in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic, the department of Police made proper arrangements for the trainings as health tests were made which included
Covid-19 tests. He said necessary strategies and procedures to adhere to Covid-19 regulations were made prior to the trainings. “It was also presented before the National COVID-19 Secretariat (NACOSEC) and the cabinet and
they approved the training,” he said. He said once the investigations are completed, the department will then decide on what will happen next regarding the trainings. Mopeli passed his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and to all Basotho.
