Africa-Press – Lesotho. His Majesty King Letsie Ill accepted credentials from the Ambassadors of the Republic of France and the Republic of Cuba during an event held at the Royal Palace on Thursday.

In acceptance, His Majesty expressed gratitude to France and its people saying relations between the two countries emanated 200 years ago when missionaries arrived in Lesotho.

“We have since enjoyed relations and thus are willing to further strengthen these bilateral ties”. he said.

Talking about the issue of reforms of which the European Union has since supported Lesotho financially and otherwise, he expressed hope that despite challenges surrounding reforms, they will be adopted so that Lesotho and Basotho can endure the much-needed stability.

Over and above that, the King commended France for the establishment of Alliance Francaise in Lesotho which he said has not only contributed to bringing cultural and linguistic services to Basotho but in bringing vibrancy to the Maseru city as well.

Talking to Cuba, His Majesty mentioned that Cuba has been instrumental in training and provision of education to Basotho, which has contributed to developing the human skills of this nation.

He also talked about the issue of humanity that is faced with several challenges; from pandemics to climate change urging Cuba to stand in solidarity with Lesotho so that their voices can be heard in the multi-sectoral system.

He promised the two Ambassadors support during their tenure of duty in Lesotho. Delivering a speech, the Ambassador of France to Lesotho, Mr. David Martinon paid tribute to the late founding father of Basotho, Morena Moshoeshoe l who had tenacity to uphold peace and harmony despite the challenges he faced.

Mr. Martinon further said his presence in Lesotho aims also to uphold these relations not in the cultural and linguistic area but in exploring investment opportunities as well that would ensure prosperity for the two nations.

He stated that France also acknowledges the participation of Lesotho in SADC, further noting they are keen towards the implementation of reforms in the country.

Similarly, Mr. Enrique Gonzalez, Ambassador of Cuba to Lesotho acknowledged bonds of friendship which have been in existence for the last 44 years. He said the visit of His Majesty in 2022 to Cuba was a testimony of Lesotho’s commitment to promoting these relations.

The event also saw the presence of Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane and other Ministerial officials. The pair also paid a courtesy call to the Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane.
