Girls Coding Academy has scooped 16 gold medals from the First LEGO League that took place in Johannesburg on Saturday With the aim to encourage participation of young boys and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes, Girls Coding Academy had applied to take part in the First LEGO League,
seeing this as a great opportunity. Girls Coding Academy Tutor Thabang Pinyane acknowledged that even though they did not become champions of the league, they
managed to get 16 gold medals. “Out of all 16 missions that where expected to be performed through the robots, 16 of our participants managed to successfully
perform five missions. In an interview with Informative Newspaper, Girls Coding Academy Marketer Tebello Thamae said this friendly competition consisted
of teams of students from age four to 13 who engaged in research problem-solving, coding and engineering, who built and programmed Lego robots that navigate the
missions of the robot game. “Teams participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real world problem. This experience also helps students engage in hands STEM experiences, building confidence, growing knowledge and developing habits of learning,” Thamae said.
The First LEGO League introduced STEM to children through fun, exciting global robotics program, helping students and teachers build a better future together. The first three divisions of the league inspired youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding and design skills.
