Africa-Press – Lesotho. Google has invited applications for the 8th cohort of Google for Startups Accelerator Africa Programme.

It’s a three-month free virtual programme that aims to provide African startups with mentorship, technical resources and access to a global network of experts and investors.

Online applications are open from April 29, to May 20, 2024, for the programme which will run from June to September, 2024.

Focus is on startups leveraging AI and Machine Learning (ML) to address critical challenges and unlocking new opportunities across the continent.

Eligible startups must be based in Africa or building Africa-centric solutions and should be utilising AI/ML in a transformative way.

Startups play a vital role in shaping the continent’s future; from fintech and agritech to healthcare and education.

They have contributed to the rapid digital transformation in Africa and are considered the lifeblood of innovation and economic growth; creating jobs and solving some of society’s most pressing challenges.

Since its inception in 2018, Google for Startups Accelerator Africa has supported 106 startups from 17 African countries

The startups have collectively raised over $263 million (Sh34.72 billion) and created more than 2,800 direct jobs.

Google head of startups ecosystem Africa, Folarin Aiyegbusi, said Africa’s tech ecosystem is a hotbed of innovation and AI has the potential to be a transformative force across various sectors.

“We are excited to support the next generation of African AI pioneers through the Google for Startups Accelerator, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to build successful, impactful businesses,” he said.

The programme will include free financial support where innovators will receive up to $350,000 (Sh46.2 million) in Google Cloud credits, as well as mentorship that involves personalised guidance from Google AI experts, seasoned entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

It will also include technical workshops involving in-depth training on AI/ML development, product strategy and scaling.

Attendees will also have connections to potential investors, partners and customers and a supportive network of fellow founders facing similar challenges and opportunities.
