Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Ministry of Law and Justice is continuing to implement strategies aimed at combating overcrowding in Lesotho’s Correctional Institutions.
This was said by the Minster in the Prime Minister’s Office Mr. Limpho Tau during question and answer session in the National Assembly on Thursday after a Member of Parliament and also Chair of Chairs Mr. Mokhothu Makhalanyane asked if the Ministry was aware of severe overcrowding at correctional institutions in particular Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI).
Mr. Tau said the Ministry is exercising the early release scheme, amnesty on specific events such as the King’s Birthday and Christmas amongst others, indicating that 200 inmates were released on amnesty this year in celebration of the King’s birthday.
“Amnesty is usually granted to inmates with good behaviour, have completed half of their sentence and are rehabilitated amongst others” he said.
He added that the Ministry renovated MCCI, isolation cells based in Maseru, Mafeteng, Leribe and Mohale’s Hoek, indicating that seasonal campaigns aimed at raising awareness on infectious and other diseases are usually held.
