HEALTH MINISTER BIDS FAREWELL TO CUBAN HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Minister of Health, Mr Selibe Mochoboroane says the past three years have been challenging for Lesotho and the rest of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This, he said when bidding farewell to Cuban healthcare professionals who came to Lesotho in 2019. The farewell event was held in Maseru on Tuesday. Mr.

Mochoboroane said the arrangement of doctors on a mission to Lesotho was part of the bilateral agreement between the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba and the Kingdom of Lesotho. Mr.

Mochoboroane noted that during the Cuban healthcare professional’s tenure in the country, there were many challenges in the political landscape and the Ministry of Health leadership, but the Cuban doctors continued to deliver the best possible healthcare services to Basotho every time they were required to.

He emphasised that the COVID-19 pandemic did challenge the plans that the country had made, saying it was of interest to the country to have brought 23 more health professionals through the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cuba.

The Minister highlighted that the escalating financial demands made it difficult for the Ministry of Health to implement this plan, even though the gaps in human resources for health remained a priority for Lesotho’s health care.

“We know it has not been an easy journey that you were also not able to travel back home to enjoy your annual holidays due to flight challenges and travel restrictions brought about by COVID-19, but you still managed to deliver your best, Lesotho shall forever be grateful for the sacrifice,” he said.

He mentioned that he was made aware that there has been a challenge in receiving their stipends for October 2019. However, he expressed his hope that the six-month extension of their contracts in Lesotho has managed to put the above issues at rest. Mr.

Mochoboroane revealed that he was also made aware that the Cuban healthcare professionals remained on duty when the Basotho doctors suspended calls and he said the Ministry of Health extends its appreciation to the Cuban doctors for remaining committed to their work and it is doing everything to ensure that the doctors receive what is due to them.

“On behalf of the people of Lesotho and the Ministry of Health, I would like to thank you, the Cuban for the remarkable services you offered to Basotho and I hope you had a wonderful stay in Lesotho,” he concluded. He wished that their experience has equipped them with exceptional knowledge and skills that they can carry out in their lifetime.

At the same event, the team leader of the Cuban doctors Dr Yamisleydis Ruiz Marache said they came as 12 doctors and they are really sad that they are leaving but at the same time, they are happy that they are going to their homes after a long time.

Speaking on behalf of the Lesotho doctors, Dr ‘Nyane Letsie applauded them for being COVID-19 heroes because they had been with them throughout the difficult time.

She said all she saw during their serving at Queen II and Mafeteng Hospital during their hard time, was dedication and expertise hence wishing them well as they return to their loved ones.

Dr Letsie also indicated that there are more than 12 young doctors who have completed their medical studies in Cuba in the past three years. The Cuban healthcare professionals who came to Lesotho in 2019 included doctors in family medicine, dentists and other specialists.
