ICT OPPORTUNITY TO DRIVE SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) stakeholders should strive for opportunities that can make an impact on the communication sector. Minister of Communication, Knowledge and Technology, Mr Thulagano Segokgo said this during the ICT Pitso 2023 held under the theme “Opportunities in the transition towards a knowledge-based economy” in Tlokweng Tuesday.

Mr Segokgo said that could be achieved through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) as they played a pertinent role in developing opportunities aimed at transforming the economy into a knowledge based economy.

He explained that ICT Pitso was a consultative forum that brought together stakeholders from all sectors of the economy including the public, to deliberate on how ICTs could be leveraged for economic activities and social good.

As part of its economic diversification strive, he said, Botswana was transforming itself as a well- informed economy and therefore positioning itself well to become an ICT regional hub. He said that demonstrated government’s commitment towards developing an innovative vibrant, diversified and private sector-led economy.

Mr Segokgo said there were immense opportunities for all, government, businesses and citizens in the knowledge based economy, citing among others productivity, revenues and electronic government interventions.

He further said knowledge based economy would lead to self-employment, revenue growth and empower sectors to realise their potential and value in economic development.

“The strategy aims at enhancing industrialization for targeted sectors and make a meaningful contribution to the livelihood of Batswana,” he said.

He further noted that government continued to improve in the provision of innovation and technology that allow businesses to thrive into a high income status depicted in the country’s vision 2036.

Minister Segokgo also said stakeholders should develop capabilities to have future oriented skills and digital knowledge to enable Botswana create a culture of innovation.

He further said the innovation and technology sector had not been performing well hence the call to citizens to help drive the growth of the country’s economy by establishing viable businesses.

“Let us continue to promote a positive culture that can take this country forward in terms of creating opportunities and self-employment,” he said.

He said transformation into a knowledge-based economy presented opportunities for scaling up the economy with the current natural and knowledge endowments.

Minister Segokgo said innovation was a vital component as the country moved towards a knowledge- based economy by taking advantage of opportunities presented by the fourth industrial revolution.
