Africa-Press – Lesotho. There is need to embrace digital technology in the promotion of First Aid process at work and off work, Orapa Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM), senior engineering manager, Mr Lefoko Sethoko has said.
He was speaking during inter-departmental First Aid competitions in Orapa on Saturday. The theme Lifelong First Aid Learning in the Digital World resonated well with OLDM’s 2023 intent of total safety excellence through its, ‘leaving home safe, back home safe,’ commitment.
Mr Sethoko said that excellence came with learning, thus the advent of fourth industrial revolution called for all to embrace digital technology in the promotion of First Aid process at work and off work.
He said the theme challenged OLDM management, particularly training development department to consider incorporating digitization of first aid learning,.
He said it also called for the mines to liase with strategic business partners such as Red Cross. Digitisation he said was part of Debswana 2024 strategy as well President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s pillar the of the Reset agenda.
Mr Sethoko stated that hosting inter-departmental First Aid competitions gave them an opportunity to not only showcase their capabilities on first aid but also to reflect on Environmental Conservation Occupational Health and Safety (ECOHS) performance as OLDM employees.
The competitions, he said, further emphasised on the rule of law as required by the Mines, Quarries works and Machinery Act, part four, regulations 39-50.
He indicated that over the years OLDM had cultivated a culture of safety excellence which kept improving on by adopting systems and encouraged behaviour that shifted thinking and practices to one of safety consciousness at all times.
Mr Sethoko stated that participation in the inter-departmental first aid competitions, was in itself a demonstration by those involved, of their commitment to create and maintain safe work environment.
For his part senior ore processing manager, Mr Nelson Nareetsile said the purpose of the competitions was to networking whilst creating awareness on first aid practices.
The competitions, he said also helped Debswana prepare for Botswana Chamber of Mines inter-mine competitions billed for October 28 this year will be hosted by Botash in Sowa.
He said, despite collective efforts by mining entities to achieve zero harm in the working environment,mining industries were stil prone to accidents that required First Aid before the arrival of medical assistance.
Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines won the competition followed by Mining Team B, Security team No1 plant took position three while Orapa Plant No2 A took position four.
