International Media Highlights African Union New Chairpersonship

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The international media highlighted the assumption of the African Union (AU) chairpersonship by the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, which they considered a position of great responsibility in the continental context.

The Voice of America headlined that “João Lourenço assumes the Presidency of the African Union and promises to find solutions for peace”.

In the text, it makes references to the acceptance speech of the AU Chairman, especially in the part where he addressed the issue of reparations and the importance of foreign investment in the continent.

The 38th summit of the African Union focuses on the payment of reparations for colonialism, but the debates were also dominated by regional conflicts and insecurity.

The DW writes that “Angolan President promises to put his experience at the service of peace in the African Union and launch a vast plan to attract investment and financing.

It reported that in his speech, João Lourenço addressed the “immense problems linked to peace and security” on the African continent, “which constitute a factor blocking” all initiatives and actions for the development of these countries, promising to put his experience at the service of the African Union in the search for solutions for peace and implementation of economic policies”.

The Portuguese news agency “Lusa”, in turn, highlights the words of the Angolan statesman, according to whom “Presidency of the African Union brings many challenges, but Angolans are to be congratulated”.

In another news item, Lusa published the statements of the President of São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, who considers it “a pride” that a Portuguese-speaking country leads the African Union. “João Lourenço talks about obstacles to peace in Africa, but says he wants to bring solutions”, can be read on the website of Radio France Internationale (RFI).

Assuming himself as a champion of Peace in Africa, the Angolan President said that he will use this year to talk about possible solutions not only for wars, but also for the sustainable development of African countries.

The Diário de Notícias, a Portuguese newspaper, published an article entitled “The five pillars of the Angolan presidency for Africa”, in which it points to the DRC/Rwanda conflict as one of the main challenges.

Economic development and regional integration are advancing, through the operationalization of the already existing African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), sustainable development and African unity, pressure for the reform of the United Nations, multilateral cooperation and international partnerships, as the remaining pillars. Vatican News, a news agency affiliated with the Vatican, writes that “the President is committed to dialogue to resolve conflicts in the African Union”.

The news channel “Brasil 247” reports: “New leadership of the African Union promises to promote the unity of the continent and its socioeconomic advancement”. Referring to the acceptance speech, it reports that João Lourenço reaffirmed his determination to accelerate the aspirations of the pan-African bloc, promoting unity and socioeconomic advancement.
