Africa-Press – Lesotho. The United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) lead security sector, has visited Lesotho to promote a positive civilian military relations within Lesotho.
The five day seminar intends to support the ability of Lesotho senior military and government officials to work together in order to effectively address the nation’s needs and its national security challenges.
Among the security sector attendees were officials from the Lesotho Defense Force (LDF), Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS), National Security Service (NSS), Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS), Ministry of Defence and
Ministry of Police and Public Safety. Security sector members are expected to engage in an interactive course presented by the U. S Institute for Security Governance, Defense Security
Cooperation Agency and the U. K Department for International Development on the methodology of effective governance and a secure environment. This will be
through focused modules to enhance skills and behaviors conducive to effective governance. Delivering the opening remarks, the U. S Ambassador to Lesotho
Her Excellency Rebecca Gonzales acknowledged the union of the security sector which according to her, is going to advance the rule of law and stability in
Lesotho. She said emerging new technologies have brought challenges worldwide hence it is important to improve security services in order to overcome the challenges with the use of advanced technologies.
She further highlighted that natural disasters such as floods, drought and climate change also continue to create new national security threats and the skills to be acquired at the symposium will also help address
such. Meanwhile the Minister of Defense Hon. Tefo Mapesela appreciated the support the two countries are offering to Lesotho. He said the skills they are going to acquire will improve their security sector in order to respond effectively to the needs of the nation.
