Kabi vows to settle farmers’ arrears

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Hon. Nkaku Kabi has on Tuesday announced that the ministry is working towards settling the remaining debts of wool and mohair

farmers. These debts had been allocated in the M10 million subvention, from which arrears amounting to M8 million have been settled. Kabi said the payments are expected

to be completed between November and December this year. He said this follows the initiative by the government whereby it procured M10 million to pay the farmers after the broker Stone Shi failed to pay these farmers.

Shi had asked the government to intervene in this matter earlier this year, admitting that he will owe the government of Lesotho thereafter. The minister further said they are still in the preparations for the payment

process and once they are done, they will physically deliver the payments to the farmers’ households. “We will make arrangements with the Minister of Defence

and borrow a chopper to go to the remote areas and deliver the payments to the farmers,” he said. He disclosed that these are the farmers who do not have bank

accounts and live in remote areas where there is no network for mobile money. These are residents in five districts; Qacha’s Nek, Quthing, Maseru, Thaba-Tseka and Berea.
