Africa-Press – Lesotho. While representing Lesotho at the European Development Days 2022 (EDD22), His Majesty King Letsie III highlighted that European Union (EU) has greatly supported Lesotho in many ways. The King also acknowledged the forum, saying it brings together the variety of participants to share knowledge, experiences and ideas that can assist their efforts in finding solutions to the world’s most critical challenges. He further said the theme of EDD22 is ‘Global gateway, building sustainable partnerships for a connected world’.
“I believe that this theme is highly relevant and appropriate in view of political, economic and social challenges we have to deal with in recent years,” he noted.
He said the Covid-19 pandemic has laid bare the existing inequalities within their countries and the inequalities between the countries of North and of the South.
He pointed out that it has forced them to recognize that stronger partnerships, cooperation and collaborations are essential elements in dealing with and confronting global crisis now and in the future. He emphasized that the Kingdom of Lesotho has enjoyed and benefitted from a strong partnership with the EU, spanning a period of almost 50 years.
He continued to say that this partnership has been characterized by cooperation in many areas that they regard as critical pillars for their economic advancement and political stability.
He indicated that the EU has provided valuable assistance and support to their efforts of strengthening democratic institutions and entrenching democratic culture.
Recently the EU has provided much needed support to the country’s judiciary in dealing with sensitive high profile cases that are before courts of law.
He also mentioned the significant contribution EU did towards the national reforms process. “This important and historical national exercise encompassing constitutional, parliament, judiciary, security, public service, media and economic reforms is expected to lay solid foundation for improved governance,

political stability, greater national cohesion and enduring peace,” he said. Speaking on the issue of climate change that imposes great threat to the world and humanity at large with food and water scarcity, increased floods, extreme heat, levels of diseases, he said; “The government of Lesotho and its people applauds EU for conceiving this noble global gateway strategy that aims to develop sustainable responses and solutions to the problem of climate change.
In recent years, the EU has proved to be one of Lesotho’s strongest partners in the fight to mitigate the harshest effects of climate change. He said EU has provided and continues to provide the government of Lesotho with
technical support and assistance to institute appropriate policies that will help to reverse environmental degradation and enable more efficient adaptation to climate change. He said having recognized that one of the country’s assets is water and that this valuable asset could be determinant to the development and growth in a green and resilient economy, the EU is also supporting the government and its people in the effort to increase availability of clean and affordable water and sanitation systems.
