Lesotho Declares Two-Week State of Emergency as Bills Not Passed

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho’s Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro declared a state of emergency after lawmakers in the southern African kingdom parliament failed to pass two bills, including one aimed at more regulation of political parties in parliament.

The state of emergency will continue until Aug. 29, Majoro said in a notice in the Government Gazette published on Tuesday. Lawmakers have failed to pass bills to amend the Constitution and the National Assembly Electoral Act, according to Majoro.

This will mean a “continuation of unchecked politicization of the public service,” floor crossing in parliament and inadequate regulation of political parties, he said.

The landlocked country, which is surrounded by South Africa, has been plagued by years of political instability. It has had two prime ministers in the past five years and the All Basotho Convention, which has been in power since 2017, has been riven by divisions. That was exacerbated by a party vote in February in which former Health Minister Nkaku Kabi was elected as leader, defeating Majoro for the role.
