Africa-Press – Lesotho. Members of the Local Education Group (LEG) had a meeting that prepares them for the coming Mid-Term Review and Joint Monitoring Visits planned to be implemented concurrently from April 20th to May 22nd, 2026.
LEG is a government -led multi-stakeholder body coordinating the education sector, chaired by the Ministry of Education and Training and co-chaired by UNICEF. Its key members include ministry officials, development partners, national and international Civil Society Organizations and teacher organizations.
The Ministry of Education and Training received funding from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) under the System Capacity Grant (SCG) in May 2023 and it is coming to an end in May 2026.
One of the objectives of the grant was to Strengthen capacity, adapt and learn, to implement and drive results at scale and under this objective there were two key activities; Joint Monitoring Visits and the Development of a Partnership Compact that helped unlock funds for Lesotho.
As the SCG comes to an end, the Ministry is expected to conduct a Mid-Term Review of the compact that will help unlock future funding for the sector.
It is also an opportune time for the Ministry to conduct the Joint Monitoring Visits, which are done by the LEG in order to monitor implementation of activities under various projects including those outlined in the partnership compact and also to ensure adherence to the plan
Lesotho’s education sector has undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly with the involvement of international partners like UNICEF and the Global Partnership for Education. The System Capacity Grant, received in May 2023, aims to enhance the capacity of the education system and ensure better outcomes for students. As the grant period nears its end in May 2026, the Ministry of Education is focusing on evaluations and monitoring to secure future funding and improve educational quality.
