Africa-Press – Lesotho. The office of the trade commission of India-Southern African Development Council (SADC) was opened at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science (CSS) on Thursday. The office will be helmed by CSS director Dr S Arumugam, who, in the capacity of trade commissioner, will be India’s representative in the council.

Later, addressing an international seminar on Indian sports diplomacy and sports development, Jason Keats Hall, High Commissioner of Jamaica to India, and Thabang Linus Kholumbo, High Commissioner, Kingdom of Lesotho, said there is a vast opportunity for collaboration with India in sports and education, besides trade.

For instance, Kholumbo said, Lesotho is looking for investors to develop the game of cricket in their country, and India could be the best bet for that.

Hall said low glycemic index food like yam enable athletes’ body to perform better, and hence trade of such food items from Jamaica to India could be a viable proposition.

Since Jamaica has a rich legacy of producing the world’s best sprinters, Hall called for India-Jamaica sports diplomacy in the form of former Jamaican sprinters sharing their technical know-how with Indians.

He added that three Indian athletes are currently training in Jamaica and some experts from Jamaica are in India, giving training to athletes. Hall said there are 12 scientifically-proven reasons one of which is genetics, that lead to Jamaica producing world-class sprinters.

India Economic Trade Council president Dr Asif Iqbal said a few collaborative programmes are on the anvil, and there will be many visits by delegates from these countries to India, that will help evolve specific programmes in the coming years.
