Lesotho Signs Landmark Agreement for Democracy Governance

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations has on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho, signed an Agreement with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) in Maseru on Friday.

In his remarks during the signing ceremony, the Minister, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane said the agreement is more than a legal instrument, but it is also an affirmation of shared values and a joint commitment to advancing Lesotho’s development priorities.

He emphasized that the Agreement lays a solid foundation for International IDEA to operate in Lesotho with clarity, mutual respect and legal certainty.

This, the minister said will enable the organisation to support national efforts in key areas such as Constitution Building and the Rule of Law, Electoral Processes, Gender and Inclusion, Digitalisation and Democracy, Climate Change and Democracy, as well as Money in Politics, among others.

Mr. Mpotjoane highlighted that the Government of Lesotho recognises the critical role International IDEA plays globally and expressed gratitude for the decision to establish a country office in Lesotho.

‘Hosting International IDEA is a privilege and an opportunity to strengthen our democratic institutions,’ he added.

On the other hand, the Regional Director for the Africa and West Asia Region at International IDEA, Dr. Roba Sharamo, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to fostering democracy across its member states.

He said the establishment of an office in Lesotho will enhance support towards strengthening democratic and governance institutions.

He stated that the organisation looks forward to collaborating with national stakeholders to promote inclusive governance, transparent electoral processes, and resilient democratic systems.

The International IDEA is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to supporting sustainable democracy worldwide through comparative analysis, policy support and capacity building.
