Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Under-20 boxing team for December’s African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games is undergoing a weeklong camp in preparation for the championships.
The team is made up of six boxers and three officials and is in camp at Lesotho Durham Link for this week. The camp started on Sunday and will end this coming Sunday.
According to Lesotho Boxing Association (LEBA) public relations Pheello Sofe, the rendezvous is for the boxers to get to know each other before their AUSC Games adventure in Angola.
Sofe said the team will also compete in South Africa this month as part of preparations for the regional championships which start on December 4. “This camp is for the week, the boxers will go back to their families on Sunday,” Sofe told thepost on Tuesday.
“The main purpose is to make the boxers familiar with each other and to train together for the time being because remember these are students and they will be going back to school.
So we thought let’s put them together for a week. ”
He continued: “They were supposed to have competed last month here at home but the tournament did not happen.
However, we are working very hard to ensure that they have a match this month. They will be boxing in South Africa but we are still waiting for confirmation.
”
The countries that will contest the boxing tournament at this year’s AUSC Games are Lesotho, Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and hosts Angola.
Sofe said Team Lesotho is looking sharp and fit. “I have seen them, they look good and physically fit,” he said. “They are doing very well practicing with one another.
We have confidence in them as LEBA. ”
The 2016 AUSC Games will start on December 4 and will run until December 16. The sports that will be contested in Angola are athletics, basketball, boxing, football, gymnastics, judo, netball, swimming and tennis.
