Lesotho vow to host 2020 Region 5 Games

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho Minister of Gender, Youth Sport and Recreation, Kabelo Mafura on Wednesday signed the 2020 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Under 20 Youth Games Protocol Agreement at Bamabtha Tšita Sport Arena.

Lesotho will be hosting the games in 2020 after Botswana who is hosting it next year December and the host country is expected to sign this agreement in 36 month before the games.

The agreement was signed by the AUSC CEO, Stanley Mutoya and AUSC Chairperson Dr. Vetumbuavi Vii. The signing saw the games name being unveiled, to be known as ‘Maseru 2020 Under 20 Region 5 Youth Games.

’ Lesotho had to agree that it will abide by the rules and regulations governing the games and commit itself to host the games successfully. Lesotho vowed to ensure that appropriate, technical instruments, personnel and equipment are in place.

On this point, Mafura promised that all the sporting facilities will be renovated of which he said they will help the country in the future in improving the state of sport in Lesotho.

Mafura added that Lesotho and its nation have been waiting for this moment to enjoy the extravaganza and cheer up young stars showcasing their talents in different sporting codes.

According to Mafura, Lesotho tourism sector will score much out of these games. Mafura did not hesitate to thank the Lesotho cabinet for their assurance that the country will host the games.

The minister urged everyone to play his or her role in contributing for the success of these prestigious showpieces and that the preparations start now.

In the protocol agreement Lesotho is mandated to make sure that all funds and decisions are handled by the country. Among the provisions in the agreement, there is a need for Lesotho to appoint local organizing committee in three months from now.

The sport minister will be overseeing the work carried out by the organizing committee. In the period of the seven months now, Lesotho will be examined whether it have the capacity to host the games.

From seven to 14 months the country has to prove that it has enough support service for the games and from 14-20 months it will have time to focus on safety and security. Towards the game, Lesotho has to convince the region that it will host exceptional games. Giving his speech, Dr.

Vii said he has no doubt that Lesotho will host the games successfully citing that the country representatives are known of good performance as they always do well once they get chance to be part of the regional organizing committees during high profiled games.
