Lesotho, Wales’ rugby relations bloom

Africa-PressLesotho. The relationship between the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR) and Wales Rugby Union (WRU) is only getting better with time. So far the fruits of the friendship have been good for Lesotho.

Since the FLR was formed in 2011 links between the two countries have allowed rugby to take off in Lesotho. Today Lesotho sits proudly as an established member of Rugby Africa and World Rugby, rugby’s continental and global governing bodies.

In October the burgeoning bond will continue when visitors from Wales arrive in Lesotho to survey and assess how rugby in the country is growing and being managed, a development revealed on Tuesday by the FLR’s secretary general, Litšitso Motšeremeli.

Motšeremeli, of course, spent two weeks in Wales in May on an educational trip whose main purpose was to further solidify relations and gain tips on how things are done by the WRU.

Wales is one of the world’s leading rugby nations and is currently ranked third in World Rugby’s rankings behind only New Zealand and Ireland. “I learnt a lot and met with Wales Rugby Union president (Dennis Gethin).

I went to the rugby academies (in Wales) and learnt how they run rugby over there,” Motšeremeli said. “There are lots of things that we learnt on how they do things.

Of course, another thing was learning how they organise tournaments and (the WRU) have promised to send some people here when we have a tournament to host to help with organising.

It was a successful mission in Wales.

“Another important thing which I think is big is that later this year in October we are going to have visitors from the UK who are coming here to see how rugby is doing in the country,” Motšeremeli said.

“They will come to see how rugby is growing and the aim is to help wherever they can. We are also learning from them on how things are done.”
