Africa-Press – Lesotho. As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Letšeng Diamonds donated food parcels and seeds to 400 households in 9 villages around the mine last Thursday.
The donation is inspired by Letšeng’s normal policy approach (focusing on sustainable projects, with the capacity to generate income and benefit the whole community instead of individuals) in
order to join the national efforts in response to Covid-19 pandemic. This initiative has targeted 400 households and is the second batch of donations to Pae-la-Itlhatsoa community.
Due to Covid-19 regulations, only 2 villages were present and 7 remaining villages were visited until Saturday. The 9 villages selected are Lichecheng, Ha-Ramosoeu,
Patising, Maloraneng, Ha-Seema, Pae-la-Itlhatsoa, Ha-Masasane, Ha-Nthimolane, and Ha-Moroke. The food parcels included soup, cooking oil, peas, 25kg maize meal, 12.5kg wheat meal, 5kg beans, and seeds (carrots, cabbage,
beetroot, spinach, rape, and turnip). On behalf of Letšeng Diamonds, the acting Chief Operating Officer (COO) Motooane Thinyane said it has come to their
realization that people need more than food to curb the prevailing hunger therefore they found it benefiting to add seeds to the food packages. “As part of our development strategy, it has come to our understanding
that providing food only is not enough, as people will need more in future. We have added seeds for them to grow their own food and make money out of it,” said
Thinyane. ‘Matšepisang Phantsi from Lichecheng village said she is very grateful to be among the beneficiaries because it has changed her life. Also, she indicated that since the arrival of the pandemic, life has
been very hard but Letšeng always comes through for them. In his speech at the handover ceremony, the Minister of Mining Hon. Serialong Qoo expressed his gratitude towards the mine for
chipping in in hard times and encouraged them to do more. He further said that since the pandemic, Letšeng has never sat back but rather joined hands with the
government through royalties and donations. Qoo also encouraged the community to help each other. “Do not stop what you are doing for the benefit of this community”, he directed the mine representatives.
To the villagers, the Minister said, “If you have been fortunate enough to be one of the beneficiaries, please remember those who have nothing to bring back our culture of humanity as Basotho. Words fail me to explain how happy I am for one of the many selfless acts by Letšeng.
